Who are The Zen Circus
The The Zen Circus are a band born in Pisa at 1994 on the initiative of Andrea Appino, now the group's vocals, guitar and harmonica. The name is an homage to the Hüsker Dü and their records “Zen Arcade” e “Metal Circus”a declaration of intent that brings together punk, folk e alternative rock. The formation has been consolidated over the years around Andrea Appino, Massimiliano “Ufo” Schiavelli bass and Karim Qqru to the battery, with the entry of Francesco “Il Maestro” Pellegrini on guitar to complete the current line-up.
In over thirty years of activity the The Zen Circus have become one of the longest-lived realities of the Italian indie-rock scene. They started out singing in English and then switched to Italian in the mid-2000s, turning their sound into a rock songwriting Direct, ironic and edgy: a band that has travelled through club punk, independent label indie and finally the big stages, always remaining true to itself.
A 30-year discography
The catalogue of The Zen Circus has over ten studio albums. Among the titles that have made their mark are “Fuck you all” (2009) e “Songs against nature” (2014), an album that propelled them to the top of the charts, followed by “World War III” (2016), “Fire in a room” (2018), “The last welcoming home” (2020) e “Dear fucking friends” (2022). In 2025 the new album has arrived “Evil”, the latest chapter in a journey that continues to renew itself.
In 2019 the The Zen Circus have brought their world to the Sanremo Festival with “Love is a dictatorship”. Throughout their career they have crossed paths with important names, from the Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes on the album “Villa Inferno” collaboration with Nada.
What to expect from the live show at Color Fest
The concert of the The Zen Circus is one of the most recognisable experiences of Italian live music. On stage, the band alternates acoustic and folk moments with electric explosions and pogo finishes. The lyrics of Andrea Appino are the heart of the show: acidic, ironic, melancholic stories, sung by an audience that often knows them word for word.
At Colour Fest 14 all this takes on a different colour: playing by the sea, at sunset, on the Riviera of Sunsets calabrese changes the meaning of certain songs. Here is what to expect from the set of The Zen Circus a Lamezia Terme:
- A playlist spanning the entire discography, from classics such as “Fuck you all” to the tracks of the new “Evil”.
- The energy of a band with over thirty years of stages behind it and a live machine broken down to the last detail.
- The classic collective choir audience, a trademark of the concerts of the Zen Circus.
- The unique setting of the sea and the sunset Calabria, between the stages overlooking the beach of Lamezia Terme.
Day 2 of Color Fest 14: Zen Circus' day
The The Zen Circus are included in the Day 2 of Colour Fest 14, Wednesday 12 August 2026, one of the richest days of the edition, where international electronics e Italian singer-songwriter coexist on the same promenade. The billboard lines up very different names:
- The French Sébastien Tellier, icon of the electronic chanson international.
- The dawn concert of Cosmo, scheduled in the morning on stage Pine forest.
- The surreal energy of All Phenomena and the electronics of Populous.
- The psychedelic grooves of the Dutch Yin Yin and the live project of Nico Arezzo with Anna Castile.
In the midst of all this, the The Zen Circus represent the rock and songwriting soul of the evening: seeing them live after a set of pure electronics, with the sea behind them, is the kind of short circuit that the Colour Fest has been building for fourteen editions. Find the complete programme in the official line-up of Color Fest 2026.
The festival is spread over four stages overlooking the beach: the Sunsets Stage (CUPRA Stage) as the main stage, the Pinewood Stagethe Future Stage more experimental, the Marley Stage acoustic, with the Colour Market between handicrafts and street food.
