Populous at Color Fest 14: Italian electronic music with a global outlook

Populous at Color Fest 14, 12 August 2026 — Day 2

Populous returns live to the Colour Fest 14 and brings to Calabria one of the most original voices of the’Italian electronics. The producer from Salento plays in the Day 2, Wednesday 12 August 2026, on the Falcone and Borsellino promenade by Lamezia Terme (CZ), on the Riviera of Sunsets. A set that weaves together cumbia, Latin ambient and electronic beats: exactly the sort of music you’d want to listen to at sunset, just a stone’s throw from the sea. This is his slot in the programme of the 14th edition of the festival with the claim “Summer on a Solitary Beach”.

Who is Populous: the Salento-based producer who speaks to the world

Behind the name Populous there is Andrea Mangia, producer, DJ, sound designer and film score composer originally from Salento, in the province of Lecce. He made his debut in 2003 for the Berlin-based label Morr Music and since then has built one of the longest-running and most consistent careers on the independent scene: over twenty years of albums, artist residencies and international collaborations, with releases also on The Tempest e 42 Records.

His trademark is the movement: each album is different from the last, always in dialogue with something non-Italian. Over the years Populous crossed downtempo, dub, Latin electronic folk, digital tarantellas, hyperpop e world music contemporary, whilst remaining recognisable thanks to a Mediterranean and tropical sensibilities which absorbs global scenes and renders them with a distinct identity. It is no coincidence that his work has been featured in international publications such as Pitchfork and from specialist magazines from all over the world.

“Isla Diferente”: the new album and the return to live performances

The arrival of Populous at Colour Fest 2026 marks a full return to the stage after a long break from live performances. The starting point is “Isla Diferente”, published on’11 April 2025 for his new label Latinambient, born out of a veritable sonic manifesto rather than an album. The tracks were written between January and February 2024 during a residency in Lanzarote, the most mysterious island of the Canary Islands: lunar landscapes, dormant volcanoes, rugged and tangible nature.

The result is an instrumental journey suspended between cumbia e Latin ambient, featuring guest vocal performances from Italy, Costa Rica, Mexico e Puerto Rico. An album that combines the ethereal softness of ambient music with the physicality of electronic and South American rhythms, presented on tour with a special A/V show (audio-video) which has also graced prestigious stages such as that of the Romaeuropa Festival 2025.

Essential Populous discography

To find your way around the process of Andrea Mangia, here are the key albums that trace his evolution, from his debut right through to his latest release Latin ambient:

  • “Isla Diferente” (2025, Latinambient) — an instrumental journey through cumbia and a setting inspired by Lanzarote.
  • “Stasi” (2021) — an entirely instrumental album, featuring rhythmic tracks hip-hop slow-paced and meditative atmospheres.
  • “W” (2019) — an album that is openly queer, built around the voices of female artists from all over the world.
  • “Night Safari” (2014) — one of his works most acclaimed by international critics.
  • “Azulejos” and the early days downtempo for Morr Music, where it all began in 2003.

Populous’s live set: the perfect set for the beach

On stage Populous It is an experience of live electronics: drum machines, synthesisers, sampled vocals and processed guitars that blend into a continuous flow. His music works brilliantly live because it brings together two things that rarely go hand in hand: the the physical nature of the dance floor and the complexity from the most sophisticated European electronic music scene. At the Colour Fest 14, with the sea behind me and the sun setting over the Riviera of Sunsets, is one of those sets designed to get the audience moving without ever sacrificing depth.

It is no coincidence that Andrea Mangia has collaborated over the years with leading artists on the Italian scene, including Cosmo — who also plays a leading role in the Day 2 with a special concert at dawn on the Pinewood Stage. Two different sensibilities, but both rooted in an idea of electronics open-minded, pop and visionary, which the Colour Fest brings them together on the same day.
