Who is Mai Mai Mai?

Mai Mai Mai — official artwork for Color Fest 14, Day 3

Mai Mai is the solo project of Toni Cutrone, a musician, drummer and organiser with a long history in the Italian underground scene. His roots are in Calabria — he is originally from Crotone — but its sphere of influence has always been the entire catchment area of the Mediterranean. Originally conceived as an offshoot of other projects, Mai Mai In the 2010s, he established himself as one of the scene’s most recognisable figures, with albums released on cult labels such as Boring Machines, Yerevan Tapes e Maple Death Records.

More than just a musical project, Mai Mai It is an anthropological, auditory and geographical study. Cutrone spans territories, archives and traditions of the Southern Italy and the Mediterranean, reimagining them as an electronic ritual. This is why his live performances always take on the character of the venue where they take place — and a Calabrian beach At sunset is exactly the setting her music calls for.

The sound: dub, drone, the Black Mediterranean

The sound of Mai Mai is often described as ethno-industrial o “Mediterranean Gothic”: a mixture in which the following coexist folklore of Southern Italy, drone, dark ambient, noise, proto-techno and industrial electronics. It is dark, hypnotic music, built up in layers, where traditional voices and instruments emerge and fade away amidst electronic mists. The underlying idea is that of the Mediterranean as a place of crossing, conflict e mixture: not the picture-postcard view, but the deep, multi-layered sea of migration and memories.

The musical elements are recognisable and recurring throughout his albums:

  • Tape loops and ribbons, treated as if they were living matter
  • Field recordings collected whilst travelling in the South and in the Mediterranean
  • Drone e dub bass deep, physical, to be experienced with the body
  • Industrial electronics and proto-techno rhythms
  • Entries and traditional songs, often entrusted to guests, reinterpreted in a ritual context

Discography: from the Mediterranean trilogy to *Rimorso*

The journey of Mai Mai This can be seen through his albums, which mark the stages of a single, long journey southwards.

  • Theta (Boring Machines, 2013), Δέλτα / Delta (Yerevan Tapes, 2014) e Φ / Phi (2017): the so-called Mediterranean trilogy, which raised the profile of the project beyond Italy’s borders.
  • In the South (La Tempesta International, 2019): a journey into the Southern Italy drawn in part from material from Italian ethnographic documentaries of the 1960s and 1970s.
  • Remorse (Maple Death Records, 2022): their most ambitious album, described as “Mediterranean Gothic”, featuring an increasing number of live instruments and collaborations — with guests including Lino Capra Vaccina, Nziria e Vera from Lecce.
  • Among the most recent releases, there is also one split with OvO at 2025: a project that’s constantly evolving.
