Who are the Deadletter?

I Deadletter are born in 2020 from the long-standing friendship between Zac Lawrence (entry), Alfie Husband (drums) and George Ullyott (bass), three lads who grew up in the Yorkshire who took their first steps by playing as buskers in the squares of their home towns. Their move to a shared house in the South London transforms the project into something broader: the training is extended to six elements with Sam Jones e Will King on guitars and Poppy Richler on the saxophone, an instrument that has become a hallmark of their sound.

In just a few years, the Deadletter They became one of the leading names on the British alternative scene, the very same scene centred around the legendary Brixton Windmill and which brought bands such as Squid, Black Country, New Road, Yard Act e black midi. Following their debut EP “Heat!” of 2022, the band has built its reputation primarily on stage, with a busy live schedule taking in British clubs, European festivals and international tours.

The sound of Deadletter

The sound of the Deadletter brings together two eras of the post-punk. On the one hand, the edginess and angularity of the classics from the late 1970s and 1980s; on the other, the danceability and urgency of the current scene. The band’s stated influences range from LCD Soundsystem at The Stranglers, including obscure names such as Captain Beefheart and the Can: the result is a art-punk in which the sharp guitars, pulsating bass and driving drums create a rhythm section that is strongly dance-oriented.

This system is connected to the spoken-sung vocals by Zac Lawrence, in keeping with the tradition of the spoken word typical of much British post-punk, and above all the saxophone by Poppy Richler, which brings a warm, free-jazz flavour to the sound, described by critics as a musical homage to The Comet Is Coming. The texts are politically charged and social commentary, but the band never loses its sense of movement: it is precisely the balance between commitment and danceability to give her a distinctive identity compared to her fellow actors on stage.

Discography: from “Hysterical Strength” to “Existence Is Bliss”

The first studio album by Deadletter è “Hysterical Strength”, published in 2024 and produced by Jim Abbiss, already working with Arctic Monkeys e Adele. Twelve tracks that capture the band at the height of its post-punk intensity, ranging from fast-paced numbers to moments where the saxophone takes centre stage, as in “It Flies” and on the title track. The album has been hailed as one of the most compelling debuts on the new London scene.

The breakthrough came with their second album “Existence Is Bliss”, released on 27 February 2026 via So Recordings and preceded by the single “To The Brim”. Here are the Deadletter they expand their sound: alongside the usual post-punk with saxophone, they introduce airy synths e new-wave texture, in a more multifaceted and atmospheric album. It is the band’s most recent work, and it is precisely this that takes to the stage at the Colour Fest 2026.
