The city is not only the airport of the Calabria<\/strong> and is not only the home of the Colour Fest 14<\/strong>, scheduled for the\u201911, 12 and 13 August 2026<\/strong> on Falcone and Borsellino promenade<\/strong>. It is a crossroads of history, Roman baths, sea and cuisine that is worth at least a full day of exploration. This guide proposes a balanced itinerary, hour by hour, designed for those who arrive the day before the festival and want to discover Lamezia Terme<\/strong> in no hurry: castle<\/strong>, spa<\/strong>, historic centre<\/strong> and sunset on the Riviera of Sunsets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A useful premise: Lamezia Terme<\/strong> was founded in 1968<\/strong> from the merger of three municipalities - Nicastro<\/strong>, Sambiase<\/strong> e Sant'Eufemia Lamezia<\/strong>. Understanding it helps to orientate oneself, because the three nuclei still retain a precise identity: Nicastro is the medieval city of the castle<\/strong>, Sambiase is the village of spa<\/strong>, Sant'Eufemia is the gateway to the sea with the plain and the coast. Morning: Norman-Swabian Castle and historic centre of Nicastro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It starts from Nicastro<\/strong>, the oldest quarter of the city, dominated by the remains of the Norman-Swabian Castle<\/strong>. Built by the Normans<\/strong> between the end of the\u2019XI<\/strong> and the beginning of the 12th century<\/strong> on the core of a Byzantine fortress, the castle was extended in Swabian times by Frederick II<\/strong>, which gave it a strategic role and provided it with a pentagonal keep that is still visible today. The structure has several buildings on two levels, perched on the hill of San Teodoro<\/strong>. From up here, the view embraces the plain of Sant'Eufemia<\/strong> to the sea: it is the best vantage point to frame the geography of the city before diving into the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Descending towards the historic centre<\/strong> of Nicastro you walk through alleys, small squares and stairways. Don't miss the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul<\/strong>, of Norman origin and rebuilt in the Six hundred<\/strong>, and the Church of San Domenico<\/strong>, with Baroque paintings and a neoclassical fa\u00e7ade. The most identifiable dish, however, is the morzello<\/strong> (o morzeddhu<\/em>): a stew of entrails cooked for a long time with onion, tomato sauce, peppers and a generous helping of chilli<\/strong>, to be eaten with the pitta<\/strong>, the local doughnut-shaped bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the table will be the caciocavallo silano<\/strong>, the \u2018nduja<\/strong> spreadable and spicy, and the famous Tropea red onion PGI<\/strong>, sweet and crunchy, which grows right on this coastal strip. To drink, a glass of Lamezia DOC<\/strong>, the local denomination established in 1978<\/strong> and declined in red, white and ros\u00e9 based on grape varieties such as Gaglioppo<\/strong>, Greek<\/strong> e Mantonic<\/strong>. Leave room for the coffee<\/strong>in the area make it one of the most intense in the South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afternoon: Bastion of Malta and Baths of Charon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the early afternoon, move the route towards the coast, where you will find the Bastion of Malta<\/strong>, also called Bastion of the Knights of Malta<\/strong>a massive watchtower built around the 1550<\/strong> at the behest of the Viceroy of Naples Pedro de Toledo<\/strong>, to defend the territory from Saracen raids. Once surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge, today it is in an excellent state of preservation and offers a frontal view of the Tyrrhenian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the Baths of Charon<\/strong>, near Sambiase<\/strong>: hot sulphur springs, with waters at approx. 39 \u00b0C<\/strong>, known since Roman times as Aquae Angae<\/em>. The Bruzi, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Normans frequented it, and even today, the people of Lamezia bathe in it for the therapeutic properties of its waters and mud. Late Roman history, Dante legend linked to the ferryman Charon<\/strong> and contemporary wellness coexist in the same place: an authentic and affordable experience, perfect for relaxing before a three-day festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
